Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
